ISA is a member driven, not-for-profit, professional property appraisal society. ISA provides education and organizational support to its members and offers a comprehensive professional development program emphasizing all aspects of personal property appraisal as well as the fine points of specialty appraisal areas.

ISA was founded in 1979, has seventeen semi-autonomous chapters and is governed by a nine member Board of Directors elected directly by the membership. ISA is credited with developing the first personal property appraisal studies course written by appraisers for appraisers, based on a standardized body of knowledge.

ISA's continued responsiveness to changes affecting the appraisal profession and member requests for enhanced programs and benefits has placed it well on the way to fulfilling its vision of becoming the personal property appraisal organization of choice for professionals committed to excellence.

ISA selected the University of Maryland University program to provide academic guidance to the ISA Certified Appraiser of Personal Property (CAPP) professional education program, to review ISA course material and ensure the courses meet the University's high academic standards.
